DEOGHAR, JHARKHAND:  At least 11 people have been killed and 20 injured in a stampede near a temple in Jharkhand’s Deoghar, a town where similar incidents have taken place in the past.

The stampede took place early this morning close to a temple of Goddess Durga, where thousands had lined up for a ritual.

The police said a crowd started building up at 2 am and snaked through lanes near the temple. In two hours, it had swelled to over one lakh.

Officials at the spot tried to organize the crowd but the surge turned chaotic when at 5 am, people heard that the temple gates were finally opening and started jumping the queue.

The police reportedly used batons to try and control the mass but failed.

Those sleeping in the kilometres-long queue were trampled as others pushed towards the doors, SN Pradhan, additional director general of police in Jharkhand, said.

“Many tried to rush to the head of the queue which led to chaos and as some of them fell, the devotees got trampled,” Mr Pradhan said.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das has ordered an inquiry and announced compensation. He denied that police action exacerbated the situation. “There was no lathi-charge. I haven’t heard of any such thing,” he told NDTV.

Thousands of devotees flock to the area every year in August to offer holy water from the river Ganga to Lord Shiva at the town’s famous Baidyanath temple.

The town sees the maximum crowd on Monday; last week around a lakh people had converged at the temple. The district administration had held a review meeting of arrangements on Sunday.

In August 2007, at least five women were killed and 11 injured in a stampede at the Baidyanath temple.

A stampede on the banks of a holy river killed at least 27 pilgrims last month in Rajahmundry, on the border of the southern twin states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Shimla: The monsoon continues to wreak havoc in several parts of the country and three people have died after a cloudburst in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. The trio was buried alive on Saturday when boulders fell on their house, police said.

The house in Dharampur collapsed due to landslides in the area triggered by heavy rainfall, a police official at the site said.

Rescue workers are trying to retrieve the bodies of three missing people, including an aged couple.

The local bus stand at Dharampur, some 200 km from the state capital, was also damaged by flashfloods.

Vijay Darda Updates – The death of Afzal Talib Shah — one of the terrorists killed by the security forces in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama on Thursday —  has brought fresh focus on the growing radicalisation of educated youths in the Valley, who are increasingly taking to arms.

Before plunging into militancy, Shah, 23, had enrolled for a post-graduation course in history. He, however, used to attend religious congregations that radicalised him.

He was said to have risen swiftly through the Lashkar-e-Taiba ranks after joining the terrorist group last April.

He underwent arms training under a Lashkar group headed by Qassim — an operations commander believed to be a Pakistani national — and was allegedly involved in terror activities in Pulwama town, Tahab and several other parts of the Valley.

But Shah’s luck ran out after he went to meet his family at the Asthan Mahalla at Kakpora in Pulwama.

The information got leaked and the area was cordoned off and in the encounter that followed, Shah was killed.

According to estimates of the security agencies, nearly 100 young educated men have given up studies and picked up guns in the Valley over the last few months.

New Delhi: With the FSSAI-approved laboratory of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) finding Maggi noodles to be in compliance with the country’s food safety standards, maggi lovers are upbeat with speculations that the instant noodles will soon be back in stores.

There is nothing official about it, but speculations have started doing the rounds,
CFTRI had tested five samples sent by Goa Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when Maggi was banned in June in the wake of findings in Uttar Pradesh and other states that the instant noodles brand had lead levels beyond permissible limits.

“CFTRI finding shows that samples are in compliance with the food safety standards as per the Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011,” Goa FDA Director Salim A Veljee told PTI.

Goa FDA had sent the Maggi noodles samples to Mysore-based CFTRI for retesting of the safety of instant noodles after FSSAI expressed apprehensions on state FDA’s initial report, which had found lead within permissible limits.

In June this year, Nestle had to take Maggi off the shelves, after few states decided to ban the noodles. FSSAI had also banned Maggi instant noodles terming them “unsafe and hazardous” for human consumption.

FSSAI had also said that Nestle violated labelling regulations on taste enhancer ‘MSG’ and ordered company to submit compliance report on its orders.

Meanwhile, Nestle India’s new chief Suresh Narayanan had said that bringing the instant noodles brand back to the market is his top priority as he sought to strike a conciliatory note with authorities.

Merely a week after a two-storey building collapsed in Thakurli in Thane district, another tenement collapsed in Thane city on Monday night. According to reports in the Hindustan Times and DNA, 11 persons have died in the incident.

The 50-year-old three-storey-building, Krishna Nivas, collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday morning.  A security guard who worked in a neighbouring building was quoted as saying in the HT report that he heard a loud noise at about 2 am and then saw the structure crumble in a matter of about five seconds.

Fire Brigade officials said seven people were also injured when the building – Krishna Niwas – in D-Cabin area of Thane collapsed.

“We were all sleeping. Suddenly, the floors started moving and before we could run to safety, the building came crashing down with a loud sound,” one of the survivors was reported to have told mediapersons.

While five people have been rescued, six more are feared trapped under the debris. Efforts are underway to save them.

Thane Municipal Corporation had issued notices to residents of the Krishna Niwas building as it was in a dilapidated condition, the officials said.

NEW DELHI: Stocks of Bharat Forge surged nearly 5 per cent in trades on Monday after the company reported a 34.80 per cent year-on-year (YoY) rise in net profit to Rs 195.40 crore for the quarter ended June.

The company had reported a net profit of Rs 145 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Margins for the quarter expanded 240 basis points to 31.80 per cent, up from 29.40 per cent in the year-ago quarter, the company said in a filing to BSE.

The stock surged 4.63 per cent to hit its intra-day high of Rs 1,199 on the BSE, after falling as much as 1.5 per cent in the earlier trades amid cautiousn ahead of the quarterly numbers. Read More >>
